Neville Garrick
Photographers in history are very important because without them we would not know or be able to see pictures about the past or even see memorable moments or important people. I had never heard of Neville Garrick until now. He was a photographer, graphic artist, and filmmaker; Born in Jamaica, but studied in Los Angeles where he earned a graphic arts degree at UCLA.  His professional career started once he returned to his native hometown in Jamaica in the early 1970’s. He began working as the art director at the Kingston Daily News, also known as the Jamaica Daily News. He had always been interested in graphic design but the arts school in Jamaica at the time did not have a graphic design program. So that’s when he started at UCLA. But once he returned to Jamaica, when he started to work as editorial art director, he met Alan “Skill” Cole, who was Bob Marley’s manager at the time. He got Neville Garrick an assignment to do the sleeve for Judy Mowatt’s Mellow Mood. Once he did that, Alan offered him a job working for Rasta in the year 1973. Soon, Neville met Bob Marley at a post-show press party and soon the two became best friends. They started working together and helping each other out. Bob Marley would get helped by Neville by his album covers being made well-known and legit by Neville’s work. And Neville enjoyed that, and sometimes would play bass and other instruments with Bob Marley. Neville seemed to be making a living off of working with Bob because he was becoming famous and well-known throughout reggae music. I really like Neville’s work and what he has done with the Bob Marley album covers because he has made them famous and a symbol of Rasta and reggae music. That’s why I like it, because it has made an epic history in the reggae world and industry.
